Bringing the Irish Famine
& Diaspora to Life, In Situ
Timothy Meagher helped 15 American schoolteachers vividly convey the Irish potato famine of the 1840s to their students. The CUA archivist and associate professor took the teachers to the Emerald Isle to see the gravestones and read the first-hand reports of the million Irish who starved to death and the 1.5 million Irish who fled to the United States. Eric Ormsby, director of CUA libraries from 1983 to 1986, returns to campus to read poems that have made him one of the leading poets of his generation. CUA law school instructor A.G. Harmon will read from his newly published novel, which has just been nominated as this year's best booklength work of fiction by a first-time author. See story.

One of the world's leading demographic historians, Dean Poos runs the School of Arts and Sciences, speaks to high school students interested in applying to Catholic University and seeks to build community among the school's 161 faculty members. A farmer's son, he says that his examination of medieval English records has reminded him of reading his hometown Eaton, Ohio, newspaper. See People.

CUA's own Professor Steve Wright is now teaching courses on medieval English as a Fulbright scholar in Poland. Meanwhile, three visiting Fulbright scholars — from Uzbekistan, Russia and Austria — are joining the Catholic University community this academic year as visiting scholars. See story.
