Appointments Peter Casarella, associate professor, theology and religious studies, was named president of The Academy of Hispanic Theologians in the United States. V. Bradley Lewis, associate professor of philosophy, was named associate editor of the American Journal of Jurisprudence (South Bend, Ind.).
Awards and Honors
Miranda Miller, a CUA student, was named a finalist in the Gilder Lehrman History Scholars program, sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History on Aug. 22. Monsignor John Wippel, the Theodore Basselin Professor of Philosophy, received an honorary doctorate in medieval studies from the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (Toronto). Monsignor Wippel, B.A. 1955, M.A. 1956, S.T.L. 1960, received the Alumnus Lifetime Service Award from CUA’s Theological College on Oct. 5.
On the Road Deborah Clawson, associate professor, psychology, served as the program chair of the Experimental Psychology Division (Division III) of the American Psychological Association for the organization’s annual meeting held from Aug. 18 to 21 in Washington, D.C. She presented a poster titled “When Prospective Memory Fails: Did You Forget Something?” that was written with CUA student Lianna Bennett and alumna Katrina Kardiasmenos, Ph.D. 2005. Antonio S. Cua, professor emeritus, philosophy, delivered a keynote speech titled "The Virtues of Junzi (Confucian Paradigmatic Individuals)" at the International Conference on Confucianism: Retrospect and Prospect at the University of Toronto on Sept.1. Gregory T. Doolan, assistant professor of philosophy, will present a paper titled "Aquinas, Angels, and the Sciences” to the American Maritain Association Conference to be held at CUA from Oct.14 to 16. Phillip Henderson, associate professor, politics, delivered a lecture on President George W. Bush and “groupthink” at the American Political Science Association Panel meeting in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 1. His talk was titled "The Bush Administration in Historical Perspective.” Marc Sebrechts, professor, psychology, presented two posters at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association held from Aug. 18 to 21 in Washington, D.C. The first poster was titled “Horizontal and Vertical Field of View Extent Influence Navigation in Virtual Environments,” and was written with CUA graduate student Andreas E. Finkelmeyer. The second poster was titled “Acquisition of Survey and Route Knowledge in Virtual Environments,” and was written with CUA graduate student Michael J. Piller.
Publications Joan T. Grimbert, professor, modern languages, recently edited a collection of essays with Norris J. Lacy called A Companion to Chrétien de Troyes, published by Boydell & Brewer, Suffolk (UK). Sandra Hanson, chair and professor, sociology, wrote the article “Hidden Dragons: Asian American Women and Sport” for the most recent issue of the quarterly Journal of Sport and Social Issues, released in August 2005. Anca Nemoianu, assistant dean of study abroad and director, intensive English program, wrote a chapter titled “English Gairaigo: Learning About Language Structure from the Margins of Japanese” that appeared in Language in the Schools, edited by Kristin Denham and Anne Lobeck. The book was published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Mahwah (NJ). John Kenneth White, professor, politics, co-wrote an article with John Zogby titled "The Lost Center" in the July issue of The Polling Report. The article describes how President George W. Bush has lost significant support among independents and moderates. White co-edited a book titled Winning the White House, 2004, published by Palmgrave MacMillan, New York.
