Happy “New Year”!

By Christine Peterson

  Last year's annual benefits fair
Happy New Year to CUA faculty and staff and a big welcome to our new faculty and staff members who will embark with us on this year’s journey!

When I think about CUA and the “new year” I have multiple thoughts. First, I think about the start of our new academic year — students returning to campus and all the diligent work by faculty and staff to launch a productive year of studies. Second, as the chief HR officer, I think about the upcoming employee benefit plan year that starts January 2011. Between September and December, your CUA Benefits Team will be focusing their efforts to help you prepare for the new benefit plan year.

Here is an update of what you have to look forward to during the upcoming months:

Annual Faculty/Staff Benefits Fair: This year’s fair will be held Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center. Participants will include vendors representing CUA’s medical plan, life insurance and long-term disability plans, and employee assistance plan. Additional participants and activities are being finalized and will be announced at a later date.

Seasonal Flu Vaccines: As was the case last year, this year flu vaccines will be available twice — Sept. 20 and Sept. 30 — in Caldwell Auditorium, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. The vaccine cost is $21.50. Some good news — each vaccine will protect the recipient against three different viruses: H3N2 virus; influenza B virus and H1N1 virus.

New Benefit Options for 2011: One of our goals each year is to provide employee benefit plan options that offer quality products and the most cost-effective pricing. As we strive to accomplish this goal, we will continue to expand and enhance the options from which employees can choose.

Open Enrollment Process: This year’s Open Enrollment will start Nov. 3 and conclude Nov. 17. Last year the online Benefits Express system was utilized for the Open Enrollment process and faculty/staff feedback was very positive. This year, faculty and staff will again enroll in their benefit plan using the convenience and ease of this system.

Communication: The CUA Benefits Team promises to keep you “in the know” during the upcoming months. Watch for ongoing information as we prepare you for your upcoming Open Enrollment decisions. A Benefits Team goal is to provide you with the very best information, allowing you to make well-informed decisions on your benefit plan.

Last, although it is not directly related to our annual Open Enrollment event, please note the following Wellness related information:

Reminder to UnitedHealthcare Plan Participants: Earlier this year, you were introduced to the SimplyEngaged program, a yearlong wellness program for you and your spouse. To begin, you will need to register on www.myuhc.com. This forum will provide you with a convenient way to view all your claims history online. Then, if you log in, you will see on the right-hand side of the page a box that says “Health Assessment.” Click on the icon, and you are on your way!

Both you and your spouse are eligible to complete the online assessment. As a reward, you will each receive a $75 gift card! You can choose from hundreds of merchants including Target, Sears, Kohl's, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, CVS and many others. After you complete your assessment, you and/or your spouse can enroll in an online or a telephone-based health coaching program to focus on losing weight, quitting smoking, improving your exercise plan, relieving stress and more. You can receive additional gift cards for your efforts. After you complete a target activity, you will receive an e-mail notification from UnitedHealthcare within five days to inform you of your reward and how to claim it.
