Wellness in the Workplace — Are You Optimizing This Opportunity?

By Christine Peterson

Wellness in the workforce has been a popular topic for many employers in many business sectors for the past several years. Projections from the 1990s suggested that both workers and employers would become increasingly interested in keeping the workforce healthy as a tactic in achieving “life balance” in the 21st century.

At CUA, we are very fortunate to have a work environment that fosters some of the most critical life-balance drivers. Aside from our very generous holiday and vacation leave benefit, we have a work environment that is appreciative of employee contributions and supportive of employee development. We also have a comprehensive benefit plan that offers several options for faculty and staff to choose from to support a healthy lifestyle. The CUA-sponsored UnitedHealthcare plans are an option to help manage wellness and health care. As you may have noticed from earlier Inside CUA articles, wellness is a focal topic for 2010.

Did you happen to attend the Know Your Numbers wellness event on March 4? If you did, you now have more information about your health care needs. Even if you did not attend, you may still participate in SimplyEngaged, a yearlong wellness program for you and your spouse (if you are both current participants in any of CUA’s UnitedHealthcare programs). To begin, you will need to register on This Internet forum will provide you with a convenient way to view all your claims history online. Then, if you log in, you will see on the right side of the page a box that says “Health Assessment.” Click on the icon, and you are on your way!
Both you and your spouse are eligible to complete the online wellness assessment. As a reward, you will each receive a $75 gift card! You can use the card to make purchases from hundreds of participating merchants including Target, Sears, Kohl's,, Barnes & Noble and CVS. After you complete your assessment, you and/or your spouse can enroll in an online or a telephone-based health-coaching program to focus on losing weight, quitting smoking, improving your exercise plan, relieving stress, and more. You can receive additional gift cards for your efforts. After you complete a target activity, you will receive an e-mail notification from UnitedHealthcare within five days to inform you of your reward and how to claim it.
“Stepping Into Spring” is the next wellness-oriented activity being planned for all employees. Now that spring is here, you will want to take advantage of being outside while you exercise. To encourage you to walk more, the Office of Human Resources will be sponsoring a walking program from April 19 through April 30. You may have participated in a similar program last year. Once again, we will form teams (5–10 members each) and ask each team to track their total number of steps per day. To assist you in doing so, we will provide pedometers to the first 250 people who sign up as a member of a team. The two teams with the highest number of steps will receive special rewards. If you are interested in participating in this event, please contact the Office of Human Resources at extension 5050.
