CUA to Celebrate the Christmas Season
Holiday Events Include Tree Lighting, Concerts and Volunteer Opportunities


Following tradition, Catholic University will begin the Christmas season on Friday, Dec. 4, with its annual “Light the Season” Christmas tree lighting featuring refreshments, carols and a visit from Santa Claus. The calendar below has more details on this and other events.

    During the week of Monday, Nov. 30, Advent Calendars will be for sale during lunch hours in the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center. Chocolate calendars are $3 and non-chocolate calendars are $2. For more information, call 202-319-6972.

  • From Monday, Nov. 30, through Sunday, Dec. 6, ornaments affixed with gift requests for specific local children will be available on Christmas trees in St. Vincent’s Chapel, the Pryzbyla Center and the John K. Mullen of Denver Memorial Library. Gifts may be dropped off in the Campus Ministry office until noon on Dec. 11. For more information, contact Heather Donahue at 97DONAHUE@cardinalmail.cua.edu.

  • From Monday, Nov. 30, through Friday, Dec. 11, Advent Eucharistic Adoration will take place in Caldwell Chapel from 12:45 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 12:45 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays and 12:45 to 5 p.m. on Fridays. There will be no adoration on Tuesday, Dec. 8. For more information, call 202-319-5575.

  • On Friday, Dec. 4, at 5 p.m., “Light the Season,” CUA’s annual tree lighting ceremony will take place in the Pryzbyla Center's third-floor atrium (across from Starbucks). For more information, contact the Office of Campus Activities at 202-319-6003.

  • On Friday, Dec. 4, the House sponsors “Christmastime in the City,” an evening of ice skating and viewing popular Christmas trees in downtown D.C.. The group will leave from the House at 6 p.m. Students should bring money for riding Metrorail and ice skating. For more information, call 202-319-5575.

    Last year's Christmas Concert for Charity.

    On Friday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 p.m., the 21st Annual Christmas Concert for Charity will take place in the Great Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Presented by The Catholic University of America and the National Shrine, the concert will feature the combined CUA Orchestra and University Chorus. A collection will be taken to benefit the Consortium of Catholic Academies. For more information, click here or call 202-526-8300.

    The CUA Alumni Association has secured special reserved seating (limit of four seats per R.s.v.p.), and will be hosting an alumni welcome reception in the basilica executive conference room prior to the concert.   • On Saturday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m., the Great Noise Ensemble will perform in Ward Hall, Ward Recital Hall. For more information, call 202-319-5416.

  • On Sunday, Dec. 6, from 2 to 6 p.m., the Office of Campus Activities sponsors a trip to Arundel Mills outlet mall for students to do their Christmas shopping The group will leave from the second-floor Pryzbyla lobby.   • On Sunday, Dec. 6, at 4 p.m., the Women's Chorus will perform in St. Vincent’s Chapel. For more information, call 202-319-5416.

  • On Sunday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m., Theological College presents Lessons and Carols in Theological Chapel. For more information, call 202-756-4900.

  • On Monday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m., the Campus Ministry Choirs present Lessons and Carols, an evening of prayer, reflections and songs of the season of Advent, in Caldwell Chapel. For more information, call 202-319-5575.

  • On the morning of Saturday, Dec. 12, the CUA Alumni Association will assist Wreaths Across America in placing Christmas wreaths on the graves of U.S. soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.   • On Monday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m., Catholic University will hold its Annual Advent and Christmas Mass at Caldwell Hall Chapel.

  • On Monday, Dec. 21, from 3 to 5 p.m., Father O’Connell will host the President’s Annual Christmas Party in the Pryzbyla Center Great Room. The party will feature tree trimming and refreshments. Door prizes will be drawn at 4:15 p.m.
