Are You Ready?! It’s Open Enrollment Time!

By Christine Peterson

CUA employees attend the Benefits Fair last month to learn more about the new benefits options and participate in free health screenings.

If you read this on Nov. 2, please plan to attend one of four remaining Open Enrollment Information Sessions, if you have not already done so. And if you have not already picked up your Open Enrollment Packet before Nov. 2, it will be mailed to you directly via campus mail. The remaining Information Sessions are in Room 320A of the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center at the following times:

  • Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

As a reminder, the Open Enrollment time frame this year starts on Wednesday, Nov. 4, and runs through Wednesday, Nov. 18. All CUA employees who are benefit-eligible must enroll during this time frame using Even if you do not select health, dental or vision insurance, you must enroll using this Web site to ensure you are enrolled for long-term disability and life insurance, which are 100 percent paid for by CUA.

If you need guidance using the online enrollment system, please stop by the Leahy Hall Conference Room anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the five days from Monday, Nov. 9, to Friday, Nov. 13.  The Leahy Conference Room will be set up with laptops and a printer, and staff will guide you through the brief enrollment process.

Here are some preparation tips for the actual enrollment process:

  • Have your CUA employee I.D. number with you.
  • Be sure to bring the Social Security number for any child or spouse you plan to enroll in any of the plans. This information is now required by the federal government for all health plans.
  • Be aware of which plans you are enrolled in for 2009 — Medical Bronze, Silver or Gold? Dental EPO or PPO?
  • Do you need to update your emergency contact information this year? If so, plan to have the updated information on hand.
  • Do you need to update your beneficiary designation for your life insurance plan? If so, plan to have the updated information available.

Did you enroll last year and now do not recall your username and password? No worries! Your username will be “CUA” followed by your employee I.D. number, and all passwords have been reset to be your birth date, entered as MMDDYYYY.

As you enroll for 2010, do not forget to consider some of the benefit plan options available for the first time. These new options include:

  • United Healthcare Definity HSA Plan — A high-deductible plan that is connected to your individual HSA bank account, with many tax advantages for qualified medical expenses.
  • New Dental Plan Carrier — Two PPO dental plans through Guardian use the DentalGuard Preferred PPO Network. Both plans have in-network and out-of-network benefits and enhanced preventive-care benefits. Both also provide an annual maximum rollover provision.
  • Voluntary Supplemental Life Insurance through Reliance Standard — You now have the ability to purchase life insurance for yourself, your spouse and children at group discounted rates.
  • ARAG Prepaid Legal Plan — A comprehensive legal plan to help prevent and resolve legal and financial matters.
  • Health Advocate — For those enrolled in any of the UHC medical plans, this program provides you and your dependents with your own personal health advocate to help you and your family with your health care needs.
  • VPI Pet Insurance — Group discount rates with direct billing if you enroll. For additional information and election, go to
  • SimplyEngaged Wellness Program — UHC enrollees can earn valuable gift cards while they participate in this program starting January 2010.
