The New Year
By Christine Peterson
Here it is… September already and you are probably wondering, “Where did the summer go?” When I think about CUA and the “new year,” I have multiple thoughts. First, I think about the start of our new academic year — students returning to campus and all the diligent work by faculty and staff to launch a productive year of studies. Second, as the chief HR officer, I think about the upcoming employee benefit plan year which starts January 2010. Between September and December, your CUA Benefits Team will be focusing its efforts to help you prepare for the new benefit plan year.
Here is an update of what you have to look forward to during the upcoming four months:
Annual Faculty/Staff Benefits Fair: This year’s fair will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center (exact location will be announced later). Participants will include vendors representing CUA’s medical plan, life insurance and long-term disability plans, and employee assistance plan. Additional participants and activities are being finalized and will be announced at a later date.
Seasonal Flu Vaccines: Last year, employee flu vaccines were made available during the Benefits Fair. Those of you who were unable to attend that fair asked for additional flu vaccine opportunities. This year, flu vaccines will be available twice — during the Benefits Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and again on Tuesday, Oct 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The vaccines will be offered in the Pryzbyla Center on both occasions. More good news: Each flu vaccine will cost you only $21 this year.
New Benefit Options for 2010: One of our goals each year is to provide employee benefit plan options that offer quality products and the most cost-effective pricing. As we strive to accomplish this goal, we also plan to expand the options from among which employees can choose. In addition to the current benefit plan options, we will be offering three completely new benefit plan options for your consideration.
Open Enrollment: This year’s Open Enrollment will take place during November 2009. Last year the online Benefits Express system was introduced and faculty/staff feedback about it was very positive. This year, faculty and staff will again enroll in their benefit plan using this convenient system. If you have not used your CUA Benefits Express login/password since the last Open Enrollment session, you may want to log on to www.cuabenefits.com to reacquaint yourself with the system.
Communication: The CUA Benefits Team promises to keep you “in the know” during the upcoming months. Watch for ongoing information as we work to prepare you for your upcoming Open Enrollment decisions. A Benefits Team goal is to provide you with the very best information, enabling you to make well-informed decisions on your benefit plan.
Last But Not Least…. Please join me in welcoming benefits specialist Joe Schiavo to the CUA Benefits Team. Joe comes to CUA with a strong professional background and expertise in benefit plan administration and consulting.
