President
On Nov. 10, Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, C.M., university president, addressed the bishops of the United States during their annual meeting in Baltimore. EWTN TV carried his address live and Catholic News Service issued a story about it on Nov. 11.
Architecture and Planning
Eric Jenkins, associate professor, was featured in a Nov. 3 Washington Post article about his collection of notes people leave on broken parking meters to avoid being ticketed.
Athletics
On Oct. 25, Fox News aired a story about the handcrank cycle used by some of the participants in the Marine Corps Marathon. The cycle is dedicated to T.J. Barbieri, who was killed in Iraq in 2006. T.J. was the son of CUA assistant football coach Tom Barbieri and brother of current CUA lacrosse player Matt Barbieri. CUA's lacrosse team, along with the Barbieris and Genna Griffith of the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans, worked together to raise money to purchase the cycle. Tom Barbieri also was quoted in a Nov. 5 Gazette (Silver Spring, Md.) article about the handcrank cycle.
Gia Cillizza, field hockey coach, was quoted in a Nov. 7 Maryland Independent (Waldorf, Md.) article about the success of former CUA field hockey player Jayme Dinsmore.
WJLA-TV interviewed football coach Dave Dunn, defensive back Achielle Kolla and quarterback Ricca for a segment on the team's success that aired on Nov. 14.
CUA quarterback Keith Ricca was featured in a Nov. 12 Washington City Paper article about the Ricca family legacy in football.
English
Ernest Suarez, chair, was featured in a fall 2008 Literary Matters interview about theory and practice in CUA's Department of English. Literary Matters is the newsletter of the Association of Literary Scholars and Critics.
History
Timothy Meagher, associate professor and university archivist, was quoted in a Nov. 2 Toronto Star article about a 1964 Treasure Chest comic book story line about Timothy Pettigrew, a fictional African-American who wins the Democratic Party’s nomination to be its presidential candidate.
Law
Marshall Breger, professor, was quoted in a Nov. 4 Jewish Week (New York, N.Y.) article about the Jewish vote in the presidential election. Breger also contributed an opinion article on dialogue between Muslims and Jews to the Dec. 1 issue of Moment magazine (Washington, D.C.).
Richard Dieter, lecturer, was quoted in a Nov. 19 Associated Press article about inmates who do not appeal death sentence convictions.
National Catholic School of Social Service
Linda Plitt Donaldson, assistant professor, was quoted in an article that ran in the issue of the Senior Gazette (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) for the weeks of Nov. 24 and Dec. 1. The article focused on hoarding among the elderly and featured a symposium on hoarding sponsored by CUA’s Columbus School of Law and the National Catholic School of Social Service’s Center on Global Aging last June at CUA.
Politics
Philip Henderson, chair and associate professor, was quoted in a Nov. 16 Associated Press article about the transition Barack Obama faces before assuming the presidency in January.
Matthew Green, assistant professor, was quoted in an Oct. 26 Des Moines (Iowa) Register article about the Congressional candidates in Iowa. Green appeared on “Across the Nation with Bob Dunning” on the Catholic Channel on Sirius Satellite Radio on Nov. 3 to preview the Congressional races across the country.
Maryann Cusimano Love, associate professor, was featured in a photo that ran with an Oct. 27 America article about a United Nations conference on peacebuilding in which she participated. Her regular column in the Oct. 13 issue of America focused on the relationship between the United States and the United Nations during the current Bush administration. She also wrote a column for the Nov. 10 issue of America about the increase in world hunger due to the current economic situation. Her column, “Morality Matters,” appears regularly in the magazine.
Stephen Schneck, associate professor and director of the Life Cycle Institute, was referenced in a Nov. 2 National Catholic Reporter article about progressive income taxes as supported by Catholic social thought. Schneck participated in a conference call with several members of the media on Nov. 5 to discuss the role of Catholics in the election. His comments from the conference call ran in the Associated Press, the Washington Post’s “On Faith” blog, Catholic News Service and many other newspapers across the country. That same day, he appeared on “Across the Nation with Bob Dunning” on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Catholic Channel to discuss the Catholic vote. Schneck was quoted in a Nov. 8 Scranton (Pa.) Times-Tribune article on how local Catholics voted in the election.
An elections class taught by John Kenneth White, professor, was filmed by TF1 TV (France) on Oct. 22. That same day, a symosium on the Catholic vote which featured White and William D'Antonio, adjunct professor of sociology, was covered by C-SPAN, Alhurra TV, TV2 Denmark, Catholic News Service, the Catholic Standard (Washington, D.C.) and the New London (Conn.) Day. White was quoted in an Oct. 30 Canwest News Service (Canada) article about the negative impact President George W. Bush was having on Sen. John McCain’s campaign for president. White also appeared on WBUR-FM (Boston) on Oct. 31 to discuss the election. White was quoted in an Oct. 31 Canwest News Service article about the surprises and twists in the 2008 presidential campaign. He appeared on the Catholic Channel’s “Across the Nation with Bob Dunning” on Sirius Satellite Radio on Nov. 6 to discuss the transition from Bush to Barack Obama. He was interviewed for a Nov. 8 Atlanta Journal-Constitution article about how Obama was able to swing religious voters in the presidential election. White also was quoted in a Nov. 17 Huffington Post story about the future of the Republican party.
Psychology
David Jobes, professor, was quoted in a Dec. 1 Men's Health magazine article on young men and suicide.
Students
Ashley Barbera, law student, was featured in a Nov. 1 Student Lawyer (Chicago) article about the experiences of law students at the Democratic and Republican national conventions. The same publication noted that second-year law student Jordan Dansby was awarded a Fulbright grant to research and work in Colombia during the 2008-2009 academic year.
Sophomore John Byars and senior Amanda Kohut were quoted in a Nov. 4 Times Leader (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) article about a group of CUA students who traveled to Pennsylvania to campaign for Republican Congressional candidate Lou Barletta.
Arshin Khodaei, a freshman biomedical engineering major, was quoted in a Nov. 4 Great Falls (Va.) Connection article about local citizens who voted.
Joe St. George, a sophomore politics major and chairman of the CUA College Democrats, was interviewed by TV2 Denmark on Oct. 22 about his support for Barack Obama and the role of the Catholic vote in the election.
Aurora J. Vasil, a junior politics major, contributed an opinion article about the importance of women in the 2008 election to the Oct. 21 issue of the Jersey Journal (Jersey City, N.J.).
Ryan Winn, a sophomore politics major, contributed a column to the Nov. 14 issue of the Sun Chronicle (Attleboro, Mass.) about the importance of the Latino vote in this year's election.
Theology and Religious Studies
Monsignor Kevin W. Irwin, dean, was quoted in a Nov. 14 National Catholic Reporter article about the future of the study of theology at Catholic colleges and universities.
CUA in General
The October issue of Inside the Vatican featured an article analyzing the address Pope Benedict XVI delivered at CUA on April 17.
The November issue of Columbia magazine featured photos of the dedication of McGivney Hall on Sept. 8.
The November 16 issue of the National Catholic Register noted the date of this year's Annual Christmas Concert for Charity at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
