President
Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, C.M., university president, was quoted in an Aug. 27 Washington Post article about comments made by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi regarding abortion. Her statements were challenged by a number of Catholic bishops.
Father O’Connell was featured in an Aug. 28 Catholic Standard and Times (Philadelphia) article about his life and presidency at CUA.
He was quoted in a Sept. 3 Catholic News Service story about the Mass of the Conversion of St. Paul, which celebrated the opening of the new academic year. Senior engineering major Tom Giuliani was quoted in the article. The Sept. 4 issue of the Catholic Standard (Washington, D.C.) also covered the Mass and quoted Father O’Connell’s homily. Erika Hilborn, a junior nursing major, and Kelly O’Connor, a junior education major, also were quoted in the Catholic Standard article. A Sept. 18 Arlington Catholic Herald article quoted Father O'Connell's remarks during the Mass when he presented Frank Persico, vice president for university relations, and Craig Parker, associate vice president and general counsel, with the Benemerenti Medal.
Father O'Connell and William D’Antonio, adjunct professor of sociology and Life Cycle Institute fellow, were quoted in the Sept. 15 National Catholic Reporter and Sept. 16 Catholic News Service obituaries of Dean Hoge, professor emeritus of sociology.

Eric Jenkins, associate professor, was quoted in a Sept. 1 Washington Post article about the things people miss and do not miss when they leave or return to Washington.

Kevin Duffy, a sophomore soccer player, was featured in a Sept. 16 Courier-Post (Cherry Hill, N.J.) article about his experience playing at CUA.

Maria Sophia Aguirre, associate professor, was quoted in a Sept. 8 El Mercurio (Santiago, Chile) article about the relationship between family stability and economic growth.
Kevin Forbes, associate professor, discussed energy policy on “Across the Nation with Bob Dunning” on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Catholic Channel on Sept. 9.
Education
Rona Frederick, assistant professor, was quoted in an article in the October issue of Upscale magazine (Atlanta) about parental involvement in children’s academic success under the No Child Left Behind Act.

Peter Chen, research adjunct professor, was quoted in a September Aerospace America (Reston, Va.) article about a “lunar concrete” he helped develop that would enable the construction of structures, such as telescopes, on the moon

Veryl Miles, dean, was quoted in an Aug. 18 Chicago Daily Law Bulletin article about law school deans who signed a letter in support of the rule of law as it applies to the conflict between Georgia and Russia.
Roger Colinvaux, associate professor, was quoted in a Sept. 4 Chronicle of Philanthropy article about Congress' possible retooling of tax breaks for donors and other charity policies.
Suzette Malveaux, associate professor, appeared on “Art Fennell Reports” (Philadelphia) on Aug. 20 to discuss how the next president may influence the makeup of the Supreme Court and its decisions.
Philosophy
The Sept. 18 issue of the Arlington Catholic Herald noted professor Timothy Noone's selection as a Fulbright Scholar. He will study developments in late 13th century and early 14th century epistemology and present them in seminars at the Thomas Institut of the University of Cologne.
Politics
Maryann Cusimano Love, associate professor, wrote a column for the Aug. 4 issue of America about the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, which provides medical assistance to children whose families cannot afford insurance and do not qualify for Medicaid. Her column for the Sept. 15 issue centered on the National Defense Strategy, which now focuses on international cooperation in dealing with global threats. Her column, “Morality Matters,” appears regularly in the magazine.
Stephen Schneck, associate professor and director of the Life Cycle Institute, was quoted in an Aug. 29 Catholic News Service article about presidential candidate Barack Obama’s lack of attention to life issues in the speech he delivered at the Democratic Convention.
Wallace Thies, professor, was interviewed Sept. 3 on "Across the Nation with Bob Dunning" on Sirius Satellite Radio's Catholic Channel about the latest events at the Republican National Convention, with particular emphasis on the Iraq War and protestors at the convention.
John Kenneth White, professor, discussed the importance and impact of the Catholic vote in the presidential election on the “Seize the Day” morning show Aug. 25 on Sirius Radio’s Catholic Channel. He also was quoted in an Aug. 26 U.S. News & World Report article on the same topic.
White also was quoted in a Sept. 22 Huffington Post blog story about how the economic crisis impacts the presidential election.

Rev. Paul Sullins, associate professor, was quoted in a Sept. 13 Pantagraph (Bloomington, Ill.) article about men who enter the priesthood in middle age.
Theology and Religious Studies
Monsignor Kevin Irwin, dean, was quoted in an Aug. 19 Catholic News Service article about the National Association of Pastoral Musicians' regional convention in Los Angeles in August.
Students
The Sept. 10 issue of the Free Press (North Attleboro, Mass.) ran a photo of sophomore Cassandra Ainsworth with Massachusetts state Rep. Elizabeth Poirier. Ainsworth worked as an intern for Poirier.
Freshman Helen Marie Berg was quoted in a Sept. 21 Detroit Free Press article about an ice cream party held by Edy's in her Detroit neighborhood. Berg entered an essay contest about community spirit to win the party.
Spencer Blank, a junior from San Mateo, Calif., was quoted in an Aug. 24 San Francisco Chronicle article about students who must ship their belongings across country when they return to college in the fall.
Maureen Hasson, a CUA student studying politics, philosophy and media studies, competed in the Rose of Tralee Festival in Ireland Aug. 22-26. The festival was broadcast on RTÉ TV (Ireland).
The Washington Post noted on Aug. 27 that freshman politics major William Washington was a member of the D.C delegation that attended the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Washington won an essay contest to earn the right to travel to the convention.
A Sept. 21 Washington Post article mentioned that 29 CUA students had participated in a trip to Winchester, Va., to campaign for presidential candidate Barack Obama.
CUA in General
The Aug. 21 issue of the Arlington Catholic Herald detailed security enhancements by CUA’s Department of Public Safety as well as new academic programs.
The Sept. 4 issue of the Washington Business Journal, the Sept. 5 issue of eSchool News (Bethesda, Md.) and the Sept. 18 issue of the Arlington Catholic Herald noted CUA’s selection as one of the “most wired” schools in the United States by PC Magazine and the Princeton Review.
