Pope Benedict XVI's Visit to CUA

On Jan. 23, Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M., was interviewed about the papal visit to CUA in April for a later broadcast on EWTN-TV.

On Jan. 28, the winning architectural design for the papal altar, chair and pulpit for Pope Benedict XVI's April 17 Mass in Washington, D.C., was unveiled at CUA in partnership with the Archdiocese of Washington. The announcement was covered by FOX 5 News and reported in a Chronicle of Higher Education Web story on Jan. 28. The Washington Post, Associated Press, Catholic News Service, Zenit news agency, the Staten Island (N.Y.) Advance, the Union Leader (Manchester, N.H.) and WJLA-TV also covered the announcement on Jan. 29. El Pregonero and The Catholic Standard newspapers (Washington, D.C) also covered the announcement for the Jan. 30 and Jan. 31 issues, respectively.

On Feb. 7, FOX News taped an interview with Father O’Connell for a documentary about preparations for the papal visit that will air in April.

Senior Vanessa Rudnansky, a French and theology major, was interviewed Feb. 12 by Le Jour du Seigneur TV (Paris). The TV crew filmed her in class and engaging in spiritual activity. The Catholic TV station also interviewed Victor Nakas, associate vice president for public affairs, about Pope Benedict XVI’s upcoming visit to the university.

On Feb. 15, Catholic News Service ran several articles relating to Pope Benedict XVI's U.S. visit in April. Several CUA students were quoted in one article about excitement at CUA surrounding the pope's visit. Another article previewed the Holy Father's April 17 speech at CUA. Monsignor Kevin Irwin, dean, theology and religious studies, was quoted in a third article about the state of the Catholic Church in the United States today.

The Associated Press, New England Cable News, WMUR-TV (Manchester, N.H.) and the Concord (N.H.) Monitor profiled Ryan Mullen, a master's candidate in the School of Architecture and Planning, about the winning papal altar design he created with John-Paul Mikolajczyk, also an architecture master's candidate. Mullen was honored Thursday, Feb. 21 at a ceremony at his alma mater, Trinity High School, in Manchester, N.H. Mullen and Mikolajczyk designed the altar, pulpit, lectern and chair for the papal Mass April 17 at Nationals Park.



Anthropology

Sandra Scham
, lecturer, appeared on “Worldview” on Chicago Public Radio on Feb. 11 to discuss biblical archaeology.


Athletics

Women’s basketball player Brianna Peterson was profiled in a Jan. 10 Journal News (White Plains, N.Y.) article.



Business and Economics

Kevin Forbes, associate professor, was quoted in a Jan. 22 Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch article about the economic effects of the next solar cycle. Solar activity could cause blackouts, which would increase utility bills if power stations are overloaded or electrical transformers are destroyed.

Ernest Zampelli, professor, was interviewed Jan. 25 on the “Drew Mariani Show” on Relevant Radio concerning the state of the economy.

Zampelli was quoted in a Feb. 6 Savannah (Ga.) Morning News article about the effect the Lenten season can have on a Catholic’s economic status.


Campus Ministry

Rev. Robert Schlageter, O.F.M. Conv., director of campus ministry and university chaplain, was quoted in a Jan. 27 Our Sunday Visitor article about Esto Vir, a campus ministry group for male students.


Canon Law

Rev. Philip J. Brown
, assistant professor, was quoted in a Feb. 9 Naples (Fla.) Daily News article about canon law issues that have been raised regarding Ave Maria University in Florida.

Monsignor Thomas Green, professor, was quoted in a Feb. 14 Philadelphia Inquirer article about a Philadelphia priest who was defrocked by the Church.

Alan Goodman
, director, was quoted in a Jan. 22 Roll Call article about how to get a job on Capitol Hill.



General Counsel

Margaret O’Donnell
, associate general counsel for policy and compliance, was quoted in a Jan. 25 Chronicle of Higher Education article on pending legislation to reauthorize the Higher Education Act.


Law

A speech by Helen Alvaré, associate professor, law, was the focus of a Feb. 12 Zenit news agency article. Alvaré spoke about how women are objectified in today's culture of consumerism at a Vatican conference titled "Woman and Man, the 'Humanum' in Its Entirety."

Richard Dieter, lecturer, was quoted in a Jan. 24 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article about a defendant who is serving as his own lawyer in a death penalty case.

Suzette Malveaux, associate professor, was interviewed by WTTG-TV (Washington, D.C.) on Jan. 29 about hate crimes committed against members of a minority group by members of the same racial group.


Music

Jody Gatwood
, associate professor, was featured in a Jan. 21 Washington Examiner article that focused on his Jan. 26 performance at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda, Md. He also was interviewed on WBJC-FM (Baltimore) about the same concert.

Doctoral candidate Phil Carluzzo, Head Music Librarian Maurice Saylor and Associate Professor Andrew Simpson performed on WAMU-FM’s “Kojo Nnamdi Show” on Feb. 7 as part of an ensemble that has composed music for silent films.

The Feb. 19 Baltimore Sun ran a preview of the President's Festival of the Arts, which this year features alternating performances of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town and the Washington, D.C., premiere of composer Ned Rorem’s opera version of the play.


Nursing

Nalini Jairath
, dean, was quoted in a Feb. 11 Advance for Nursing article about a Washington area research consortium for nurses. Jairath is co-chair of the consortium.


Philosophy

Michael Pakaluk
, visiting associate professor, wrote an opinion article for the Feb. 1 issue of The Boston Pilot about the declining number of babies who are named after saints.



Politics

Maryann Cusimano Love
, associate professor and Life Cycle Institute associate fellow, wrote a column for the Feb. 4 issue of America about Christians who flee Iraq to evade pressure to convert to Islam. Her column, “Morality Matters,” appears regularly in the magazine.

John Kenneth White, professor, was quoted in a Jan 17 Miller-McCune.com article about the 2008 presidential election mirroring watershed election years 1928 and 1968.

White also was interviewed Jan. 14 by The Washington Post about the significance of the Catholic vote in the upcoming presidential election. White was quoted in a Jan. 27 Washington Post opinion article on President George W. Bush’s place in history as he prepared for his last State of the Union Address.

White contributed an op-ed piece about the poor prospects for a third-party presidential candidate in 2008 in the Feb. 10 issue of the Press-Enterprise (Riverside, Calif.).


Sociology

William D’Antonio, adjunct professor, and Dean Hoge, professor emeritus were interviewed in February by USA Today about the Catholic Church in the United States.

D'Antonio and Rev. Anthony Pogorelc, S.S., adjunct professor and formation adviser, Theological College, were interviewed about their new book Voices of the Faithful: Loyal Catholics Striving for Change on Jan. 3 on “Interfaith Voices,” a program that airs on NPR stations and discusses key public issues through the lenses of various faith perspectives.


Hoge was quoted in a Feb. 15 Bedford (Ind.) Times-Mail article about the shortage of priests in the United States.

Hoge also was quoted in a Feb. 26 Christian Century Magazine article about clergy satisfaction with their profession.



Theology and Religious Studies

Monsignor Kevin Irwin, dean, was quoted in a Feb. 15 Star Tribune (Minneapolis) article about the Tridentine Mass.

Monsignor Irwin was interviewed in February by USA Today about the Catholic Church in the United States.

William Dinges, professor, was quoted in a Feb. 14 Press-Enterprise (Riverside, Calif.) article about apparitions of the Virgin Mary and the Virgin of Guadalupe.


Students

Junior Kristin Davison was profiled in a Jan. 22 Times Leader (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) article about her internship experiences at the White House and in the British Parliament.

On Feb. 2, the International Assessment and Strategy Center published an article by second-year law student Stephen Landman about banks' liability when handling terrorists’ money.

Devon McChesney, a sophomore nursing major, was profiled in a Feb. 11 Burlington County (Pa.) Times article about mission work she performed in Jamaica.

Freshman Jacqueline Orwick wrote an article for the Jan. 1 West River Catholic (Rapid City, S.D.) encouraging students to apply for a CUA scholarship.


CUA in General

On Jan. 21, The Washington Post covered the annual Students for Life of America conference held Jan. 20, at CUA. The Washington Times covered the conference in a Jan. 22 article. The Post also published a Jan. 22 op-ed piece by Liz McCloskey, a doctoral candidate in theology and religious studies, about finding a presidential candidate who upholds moral values and opposes abortion.

A Feb. 19 Zenit news agency article detailed plans for the March 1 Sixth European Day for University Students in which CUA students will pray the rosary with Pope Benedict XVI presiding via satellite.
