President


Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, C.M., was quoted in a Religion News Service article about the pressure on college presidents to find prominent commencement speakers as well as on religious-based universities to find speakers who share their values. The article appeared in the May 12 issue of The Washington Post.

Father O’Connell was quoted in a June 17 Washington Times profile of Washington Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl, university chancellor.



Administration

W. Michael Hendricks, vice president for enrollment management, was interviewed on the Catholic Channel of Sirius Radio on June 19 about the national trend of students feeling the need to get into the ideal college.


Anthropology

David Clark, lecturer, was featured in a July 11 McLean (Va.) Connection article about the Loudon Archaeology Foundation, which he founded. The foundation conducts excavations and teaches the public about the history of Loudon County.

Clark and his work with the foundation also were featured in a July 22 Washington Post article.


Architecture and Planning

Luis Boza, assistant professor, and Eric Jenkins, associate professor, were quoted in a July 28 Washington Times article about the declining use of paper-and-pencil architectural sketches. Today, most students and architects use computers for their designs.

Adnan Morshed, assistant professor, wrote an article about 2006 Nobel Prize Peace Prize Winner Muhammad Yunus for the May 17 edition of The Daily Star (Bangladesh).

The May 13 edition of The Washington Times reviewed adjunct professor Travis Price’s book The Archaeology of Tomorrow: Architecture & the Spirit of Place. A June 8 Mayo (Ireland) Advertiser article described the book, which was published in Ireland.

Price was quoted in a June 16 Washington Post article about the Forest Hills neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Price designed his home in the neighborhood.

A July 11 article in Western People (Ireland) detailed a new sculpture designed by Price and 20 CUA architecture students. The sculpture, which is in the form of a bridge, is located in Belmullet, Ireland.

Price was profiled in the July 19 Irish Times.

A July 25 Washington Times article focused on Price’s use of metal and glass in his architectural designs.

A May 6 Frederick (Md.) News-Post article detailed the ideas several CUA graduate students pitched to Frederick residents about redesigning an area of the city.


Art

Nora Heimann, chair and associate professor, organized an exhibit titled “Joan of Arc: Medieval Maiden to Modern Saint,” which is on display at the Knights of Columbus Museum in New Haven, Conn., until Sept. 3. The exhibit received widespread media attention. On April 30, the New Haven Advocate, Business New Haven, the Catholic Transcript (Hartford, Conn.) and WTNH-TV (New Haven) previewed the exhibit. On May 1, she was interviewed on the morning shows on WTIC-AM and WQUN-AM. She was interviewed by the Republican-American (Waterbury, Conn.) on May 2. Her exhibit was previewed in the Newtown Bee on May 3 and the Willimantic Chronicle and the Four County Catholic on May 4. She was interviewed by the Archdiocese of Hartford's Office of Radio and Television on May 4 and appeared on “Good Morning Connecticut Weekend” on WTNH-TV on May 5. The Knights of Columbus Web site posted an online transcript of a May 29 discussion about Joan of Arc involving Knights of Columbus members worldwide as well as  Heimann and Supreme Knight Carl Anderson.


Athletics

The May 13 edition of the Burlington County (N.J.) Times noted sophomore Kelly Lukacs’ placement on the All-Capital Athletic Conference softball team.


Campus Ministry

A May 21 Catholic News Service article mentioned Catholic University's Campus Ministry program in a story about students strengthening their faith on college campuses. Ryan Hehman, a 2006 CUA graduate, was quoted about his experiences in the program.


Canon Law

Monsignor Brian Ferme, dean, was interviewed for a piece in the Washington Post’s “Reliable Source” column on June 21 about the Catholic Church’s decision to reverse an annulment it had granted to former Massachusetts congressman Joe Kennedy.

Rev. John Beal, professor, and Robert Duggan, associate fellow, Life Cycle Institute, were quoted in a June 5 Catholic News Service article about the need to evaluate the performance of parish leaders.

Monsignor Thomas Green, professor, was quoted in a July 5 Chicago Sun-Times article about the status of a priest who was convicted of sexual assault.  

Kurt Martens, assistant professor, was interviewed on Vatican Radio on June 26 about Pope Benedict XVI's decision to change the rules for papal elections.


Drama

Gary Sloan, associate professor, was quoted in a July 22 News Journal (Wilmington, Del.) article about actress Molly Cahill, M.F.A. Acting 2006, who helped create the Delaware Shakespeare Festival.


Education

John Convey, professor and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Chair, was quoted in a May 19 Columbia Missourian article about a proposed Catholic high school in Columbia and the challenges facing Catholic schools in general.

Convey was quoted in an Aug. 1 Florida Bar Journal article about Francisco R. Angones, the first Cuban-born president of the Florida Bar.

Thomas Long, associate professor, was featured in a Gazette (Gaithersburg, Md.) article about his trip to Tanzania and the T-shirt donation project he started as a result. Agnes Nagy-Rado, assistant professor, also is quoted in the article. Nagy-Rado is helping Long with the project.


Engineering

Binh Tran, chair and associate professor, biomedical engineering, was quoted in a June 15 Family Practice News article about the increasing use of telemonitoring systems in nursing. Telemonitoring systems allow nurses to monitor the health of older patients who live at home.

Panos Tsopelas, associate professor, civil engineering, was interviewed on Al-Jazeera TV on Aug. 2 about the collapse of the I-35W Bridge in Minneapolis as well as possible causes of the disaster. He spoke on WAMU-FM (Washington, D.C.) on Aug. 6 about the same topic. He was interviewed Aug. 9 by AP TV about bridge structures and gusset plates.


General Counsel

Craig Parker, general counsel and associate vice president, was profiled in a May 21 question-and-answer piece in the Legal Times (Washington, D.C.).

Parker was quoted in the July/August issue of Brookland Heartbeat about a neighborhood trolley tour that was to provide rides for students at freshman orientation.


Institute for Astrophysics and Computational Sciences

Research scientist Rosina C. Iping was interviewed in a May 29 Independent (U.K.) article about two massive stars recently identified by astronomers. Several other newspapers and Web sites published her comments as well.


Law

Robert Destro, professor, was quoted in a June 28 Religion News Service article about how religious groups reacted to the Supreme Court’s rulings during its most recent term.

Richard Dieter, lecturer, was quoted in a May 21 Catholic Online article about a new curriculum developed by the Death Penalty Information Center in Washington, D.C., to teach college students about the death penalty. Dieter is the center's executive director.

Clifford Fishman, professor, was quoted in a May 1 Associated Press article about the increased use of wiretaps by state investigators.

He was quoted in a July 16 Star-Gazette (Elmira, N.Y.) article about privacy issues raised by public surveillance cameras.

Lisa Lerman, professor, was quoted in a June 2007 Your ABA article about bullying in law firms.

Lucia Silecchia, professor, was interviewed for a May 20 Washington Post article about purchasing a condo in an unfinished complex.

C-Span aired the law school’s May 25 commencement ceremonies. R. James Nicholson, secretary of veterans affairs, delivered the commencement address.


Library and Information Science

Bruce Rosenstein, adjunct professor, was quoted in a June 16 Library Journal article about adjunct professors who teach library and information science. Alphonse Vinh, adjunct professor, also was mentioned in the article.


Life Cycle Institute

John Kenneth White, professor, politics, and Life Cycle Institute fellow, and John Zogby, senior fellow, wrote an Aug. 3 Huffington Post article about why the Democrats remain stagnant in the polls.


Modern Languages and Literatures

Lourdes Alvarez
, associate professor, Spanish, served as a scholarly adviser for a PBS documentary titled “Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain,” which debuted on Aug. 22.


Music

Ivo Kaltchev
, associate professor, and Francesca Hurst and Antoinette Velikina, doctoral students in piano performance, were quoted in a June 11 Washington Times article about teaching children how to play the piano. 



National Catholic School of Social Service

Cathleen Gray, associate professor, was quoted in an April 27 Catholic Star Herald (Camden, N.J.) article about parenting questions raised by the mass shooting at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University on April 16.


Nursing

Barbara Moran, assistant professor, was quoted in a May 1 Nursing for Women’s Health article about the creation of a lactation room at the Russell Senate Office Building. Moran played a key role in developing the project.



Philosophy

Rev. George McLean, professor emeritus and director of the Council for Research in Values and Philosophy, was quoted in a July 20 Catholic News Service article about the history of CUA and the Catholic nature of the Brookland neighborhood.


Physics

Ian Pegg
, professor and director of CUA's Vitreous State Laboratory, was mentioned in the May 7 issue of Nuclear Weapons & Materials Monitor for having provided expert input for a Department of Energy report given to Congress on the subject of how to dispose of surplus weapons-usable plutonium.



Politics

Maryann Cusimano Love, associate professor and Life Cycle Institute associate fellow, wrote a column for the May 14 issue of America magazine about refugees who have been stripped of protection in the United States because of certain restrictions of the U.S.A. Patriot Act. Her column, “Morality Matters,” appears regularly in the magazine.

Claes Ryn, professor, was the subject of an article titled “On Claes Ryn’s Political Philosophy” in the Spring 2007 issue of Modern Age: A Quarterly Review.

Stephen Schneck, associate professor and director of the Life Cycle Institute, was quoted in a May 7 Bloomberg News article about Paul Wolfowitz, who was forced to step down as president of the World Bank over allegations of favoritism. 

He was quoted in a June 7 McClatchy News Service article about President George W. Bush's meeting with Pope Benedict XVI.

He was interviewed for a June 22 Catholic News Service article about the role the Internet will play in drawing young voters to the polls in the 2008 presidential election.

Schneck was interviewed July 25 for a documentary hosted by former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich about the role of religion for the founding fathers of America.

John Kenneth White, professor, was quoted in an Aug. 22 Gannett News Service article about the lack of attention presidential candidates have given to Native American voters while campaigning.



Sociology

An interview with William D’Antonio, adjunct professor, sociology, and Life Cycle Institute fellow, was part of a story that aired Aug. 9 on NBC's Today show. The story focused on a Milwaukee parish that’s requiring parents to attend Mass in order to qualify for a tuition break for their children at the parish school.

Dean Hoge, professor emeritus and Life Cycle Institute fellow, was quoted in a May 3 Evangelist (Albany, N.Y.) article about American Catholics Today: New Realities of Their Faith and Their Church, a book he co-wrote.

Hoge was quoted in a July 20 Los Angeles Times article about how Catholics have reacted to the Church's sex-abuse scandal.

He was quoted in a July 20 Courier-Journal (Louisville, Ky.) article about young Catholics adopting more traditional rituals in their faith.

Hoge was quoted in a July 22 News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.) article about the shortage of priests in the United States.

He was quoted in a July 22 Day (New London, Conn.) article about an embezzlement case at a local Catholic school.

Hoge was quoted in an Aug. 3 Our Sunday Visitor article about the effects the sex-abuse scandal will have on members of the Catholic Church.



Theological College

The April 24 Washington Examiner and a July 10 Catholic News Service article both noted the appointment of Rev. Melvin C. Blanchette, S.S., as the new rector of Theological College.


Theology and Religious Studies

Monsignor Kevin Irwin, dean, was interviewed July 6 by Vatican Radio for a story about an apostolic letter issued by Pope Benedict XVI, allowing for greater use of the Tridentine Mass (the 1962 Latin Mass).

He was quoted in a July 14 Religion News Service article and an Aug. 1 Richmond Times-Dispatch article on the same topic. He also was interviewed about the Tridentine Mass by the Voice of America on Aug. 18. 

William Dinges, professor, was quoted in a May 7 Waco (Texas) Herald-Tribune article about what factors constitute a religious cult.

Rev. John Ford, C.S.C., professor, was quoted in a June 26 Catholic News Service article about a new glossary of words particular to the Catholic vernacular. Ford was the principal author of the book.

A report by John Grabowski, associate professor, was quoted in a June 7 National Catholic Register article about the effectiveness of sexual abuse prevention programs.

Grabowski was quoted in a June 28 Associated Press article about a new marketing campaign aimed at strengthening marriage by encouraging spouses to perform simple daily acts of kindness for each other. He also was quoted in a July 22 Los Angeles Times article about the marketing campaign.

Rev. Jacques Gres-Gayer, professor, wrote a review of the book The Jesuits and the Monarchy: Catholic Reform and Political Authority in France for the June 1 issue of Theological Studies.

Rev. Joseph Komonchak, professor, wrote an article for the Aug. 17 issue of Commonweal about the Tridentine indult.


University Archives

Maria Mazzenga, education archivist, and Timothy Meagher, archivist, American Catholic History Research Center and University Archives, were interviewed for a July 6 Catholic News Service article about a Web site created at CUA that provides access to the university's primary Catholic documents to help Catholic high school and university teachers incorporate Catholic history into a secular American history curriculum.

Mazzenga appeared on the radio show "Across America" on the Catholic Channel of Sirius Radio on Aug. 9 to discuss the Web site.


University Libraries

The rare books and special collections in CUA's John K. Mullen of Denver Memorial Library were featured in the July 12 Past Events newsletter (http://www.printinghistory-chesapeake.org/news/070712-catholic-university/apha-cath-univ-visit.html) of the Chesapeake Chapter of the American Printing History Association. Rare book and Special Collections Curator Lenore Rouse and some of CUA's rare books are photographed in the article.


Students

The May 20 issue of The Oregonian ran a profile of sophomore music student Lauren Alcantar, who passed away on May 2.

Patrick Campbell, student, law, was the subject of a July 8 San Francisco Chronicle article about his efforts to adjust laws on federally backed student loans to recognize disruptions caused by military service and not count that time away from school against a loan’s grace period.

Campbell was quoted in an Aug. 5 Washington Post article about the push for changes to the G.I. Bill, which provides money to military veterans for college tuition.

Daniel D’Alliessi, an ecclesiastical student in moral theology, was quoted in a July 6 Journal News (Westchester, N.Y.) article about the Latin Mass.

Louis D’Onofrio, a junior nursing major, was quoted in an Aug. 1 New Britain (Conn.) Herald article about underage drinking among teenagers.

Sophomore politics major Maureen Martin was featured in Sound Off!, the newspaper of Ft. Meade, Md., for raising more than $3,500 on her 19th birthday by organizing a swimming lap-a-thon. The money was used to make care packages for soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Zan Raynor, a doctoral candidate in canon law, was mentioned in a June 18 Birmingham (Ala.) News article about a new high school that will open in the state this year. Raynor will be the principal of the school.


CUA in General

The April 29 National Catholic Register noted that Tony Snow would be CUA’s 2007 Commencement speaker. A May 13 Washington Post article highlighted Tony Snow’s speech at CUA’s May 12 Commencement. NBC-TV, CNN, Fox News Channel, WTOP Radio, Catholic News Service, CBS News and the Arlington (Va.) Catholic Herald also covered the commencement address and the ceremony. The May 24 issue of the Catholic Standard (Washington, D.C.) described the event and ran photos. The May 14 Marrieta (Ga.) Daily Journal ran a photo of Snow addressing CUA students. On June 8, NBC Nightly News aired a roundup of college graduation speeches that included an excerpt from Snow’s address.

A May 2 Catholic News Service article detailed the 18th annual American Cardinals Dinner held in Las Vegas on April 27. The May 18 Chronicle of Higher Education also featured the dinner.

CUA was mentioned in a June 18 Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility newsletter article about nuclear physics research the lab facility is hosting that involves shooting polarized photon beams into a thin slice of diamond. CUA is one of several institutions contributing to the research at the facility in Newport News, Va.

An Aug. 18 Washington Post article noted the new text-messaging alert system implemented at CUA.
