Washington Post Profiles Campus Ministry

Rev. Robert Schlageter O.F.M., Conv., director of campus ministry and university chaplain, was profiled in a front-page Metro section article by The Washington Post on Oct. 1. The article was picked up by other newspapers across the country, from New Hampshire to Hawaii.

A Sept. 14 Catholic Review (Baltimore) article about the Conventual Franciscan friars mentioned that friars assigned to work at CUA have had a large impact on a campus where 54 percent of students attend Mass and eucharistic adoration attracts between 250 and 300 students.


Canon Law

Monsignor Brian Ferme, dean and professor, was quoted in a Sept. 27 Associated Press article about the excommunication of Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo for ordaining four married men as bishops.

Rev. John P. Beal III, professor, was quoted in an Aug. 18 column in the Gulf Pine Catholic (Biloxi, Miss.) about whether the lack of intention to have children renders a marriage invalid. 

Rev. Phillip Brown, assistant professor, was quoted in an Oct. 14 Miami Herald article about several cases of priests and parish administrators embezzling church funds.

Rev. Robert Kasyln, assistant professor, was quoted in a Sept. 28 Washington Post article about the excommunication of Archbishop Milingo.


History

Timothy Meagher, associate professor, was quoted in an Oct. 20 New York Times article about the recent trend of Americans moving to Ireland for jobs.


Law

Marshall Breger, professor, was interviewed for an Oct. 5 Jewish Exponent (Philadelphia, Pa.) story about the role cultural issues will play for Jewish voters in this month’s elections.

Clifford Fishman, professor, was quoted in a Sept. 29 New York Times article about the legality of monitoring strategies Hewlett-Packard used to screen employees’ interactions with reporters.

He appeared on WAMU’s “Kojo Nnamdi Show” on Oct. 10 to discuss security and legal problems companies face when employees use instant messaging.

Mary Leary, visiting assistant professor, was quoted in an Oct. 3 Gannett News Service story about the possible prosecution of former Rep. Mark Foley for sending sexually explicit messages over the Internet to congressional pages.

She also appeared on C-SPAN on Oct. 3 to talk about laws prohibiting the sexual solicitation of children over the Internet. She appeared on “Washington Journal” on C-SPAN on Oct. 7 to discuss state and federal statutes that bar the solicitation of children online.

Benjamin Mintz, professor, was quoted in an August/September Hadassah Magazine (New York, N.Y.) article about seniors who continue to work after retirement. He was a government lawyer before coming to CUA.

Lucia Silecchia, professor, was quoted in an Oct. 2 New York Times article about the Red Mass and the new Catholic majority on the Supreme Court.  For the first time in history, five Catholics sit on the nation’s highest court.

A Sept. 29 Catholic News Service story covered a two-day forum sponsored by the Columbus School of Law. The forum, titled “Roundtable on Religion in the Public Square,” featured a speech by Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., as well as a panel discussion by religious experts and leaders.


Life Cycle Institute

John Zogby
was mentioned in a Sept. 2 Evening Times (Little Falls, N.Y.) article about his appointment as a senior fellow at the university.

A Sept. 25 Catholic News Service article reported on “The Catholic Church in America: 2006” conference held at the university Sept. 20-21. The conference, sponsored by the Life Cycle Institute, brought together lay and religious Catholic Church leaders, scholars, journalists and activists to discuss the state of the Church in the United States. The article was picked up by several newspapers including the Evangelist (Albany, N.Y.), Catholic Star Herald (Camden, N.J.), Catholic Weekly (Saginaw, Mich.) and Catholic Free Press (Worcester, Mass.). Another Sept. 25 Catholic News Service article focused on the comments of keynote speaker Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, former archbishop of Washington.

The Oct. 6 edition of the National Catholic Reporter ran a cover story on the conference. Tom Roberts, the paper’s editor, also mentioned the conference in his column.


Politics

Stephen Schneck
, chair and associate professor, was interviewed by the Jornal do Brasil (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) for a story about the expected turnout of conservative voters in this month’s U.S. congressional elections.

Maryann Cusimano Love, associate professor, was quoted in a Sept. 8 Tennessee Register (Nashville, Tenn.) article about how Catholics view the United States’ response to terrorism after 9/11.

John Kenneth White, professor, was mentioned in an Oct. 5 Star Tribune (Minneapolis) article about the role social issues and values will play in the congressional elections.

An Oct. 12 New York Times column by David Brooks about the Senate campaign in Ohio referenced a report White wrote titled “This Year All Politics are National What Makes the 2006 Midterm Elections Unique,” which appeared on Zogby International’s Web site.

White was interviewed Oct. 17 by Newhouse News Service for a story about the expected impact of absentee voting on the midterm elections this month.


Social Service

Karlynn BrintzenhofeSzoc
, associate professor, appeared on WETA-FM’s “The Intersection” on Sept. 19 to discuss the Celebration on the Hill event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The event, held Sept. 19-20, brought many cancer survivors and activists to the city in support of cancer research.


Sociology

The Oct. 2 edition of America magazine summarized the results of a study titled “Experience of Priests Ordained Five to Nine Years” conducted by Dean Hoge, professor emeritus. The study found that priests are now older and more ethnically diverse than they were 15 years ago.

Hoge was quoted in the Advocate (Stamford, Conn.) and the Greenwich (Conn.) Time on Sept. 29 about homosexuality in the priesthood.

He was interviewed for a Sept. 30 article in The Plain Dealer (Cleveland) about the reaction to a new book, titled Freeing Celibacy.

He was interviewed for an Oct. 6 Voice of America segment on the decline in the number of nuns in the American Catholic Church.

Rev. Donald P. Sullins, associate professor, was quoted in a Sept. 27 Catholic Online article about the recently elected presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. The selection of the bishop, who is a woman, has caused some controversy among Episcopalians.


Theology and Religious Studies

Monsignor Kevin Irwin
, dean and Walter J. Schmitz Chair of Liturgical Studies, was quoted in an Oct. 13 Washington Post article about the pope’s decision to revive the Tridentine Mass, the old Latin liturgy.

Joseph Capizzi, associate professor, wrote an op-ed article titled “Benedict and Islam: Much Deeper than the Deep Thinkers at the New York Times Can Imagine” that appeared on thefactis.org on Sept. 20. In the article, Capizzi (a regular contributor to thefactis.org) defends Pope Benedict XVI’s comments on Islam.

Another of his articles, which focused on the issue of abortion in the context of political parties, appeared on thefactis.org on Oct. 5.

William Dinges, associate professor, appeared on ABC’s “Nightline” on Oct. 18 to discuss the possibility of the Apocalypse and groups who are anticipating it.

Rev. Timothy A. Friedrichsen, associate professor, was mentioned in an Oct. 4 Times Leader (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) article about the burial of a Vietnam War soldier whose partial remains were found recently. Father Friedrichsen presided over the service held at Arlington National Cemetery.

Rev. Paul McPartlan, Carl J. Peter Professor of Systematic Theology and Ecumenism, was quoted in an Oct. 9 Catholic News Service article about the International Theological Commission’s work to draft a statement about the fate of unbaptized babies who die.


Students

Freshman Julie Ehrmann was the subject of a Sept. 27 Free-Lance Star (Fredericksburg, Va.) article about her first year on the CUA field hockey team.

Rev. Matthew S. Ernest and Rev. Andrew R. King were mentioned in an Aug. 31 Catholic New York article about St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie, N.Y. Father Ernest, a priest at St. Joseph’s, is studying moral theology at CUA. Father King, a doctoral candidate in theology, was appointed professor of dogma and dean of students and admissions at the seminary.

Freshman Kyle Miller was profiled by The Chronicle of Higher Education on Sept. 22 about his home-built computer. Freshmen Mike DiDonato, Dan Varroney and Sarah Whalen also were interviewed about technology trends on campus for the story.

Suzie Peters, a sophomore education major, Diana Spadaro, a freshman elementary education major, and Michelle Spadaro, a freshman psychology major, were the subject of a Sept. 28 Journal News (White Plains, N.Y.) article about the CUA women’s soccer teammates.

A Sept. 1 IEEE Engineering in Medicine & Biology article mentioned the third place finish of the CUA team in the 2005-2006 Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Accessible Medical Instrumentation competition in the Patient Positioning Aid category. The students, on the team were Afshin Nabili (who was the project leader), Roland Dinga, Theresa DiSipio and Megan Payne. Nabili, Dinga and Payne are senior biomedical engineering majors while DiSipio is a junior nursing major with a minor in engineering.


CUA in General

C-SPAN covered the Sept. 22 lecture at CUA by Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. The lecture was part of a series of events to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the School of Arts and Sciences and was titled “Biodefense and Pandemic Influenza: The Research and Public Health Interface.”
