Media Coverage Fit for a King

                  King Abdullah II, monarch of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, delivered an address titled “Traditional Islam: The Path to Peace” at CUA’s Columbus School of Law on Sept. 13.  The event was covered by several local, national and international news agencies, including: Agence-France Presse, the Associated Press, Catholic News Service, Voice of America radio, NBC-TV, C-Span, Jordan Television, the Kuwait News Agency, Middle East Television, Reuters and The Washington Post.

Articles about and reprints of his address appeared in more than 150 publications and TV newscasts in the United States and abroad, including a prominently featured article in the Sept. 14 Washington Post.  News Anchor Katie Couric also mentioned his visit to Catholic University in a Sept. 16 interview with the king on NBC’s “Today Show.”

President

Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M.
, president, was quoted on a Sept. 2 WTOP-AM (Washington, D.C.) newscast regarding CUA’s outreach to victims of Hurricane Katrina, including the university’s Day of Prayer and Communion. (For more Hurricane Katrina related news, see below).



Athletics

Tom Clark
, head football coach, and the CUA football team were profiled in an article that appeared on the front page of the Sept. 1 sports section of The Washington Times.

Bob Talbot, former CUA athletic director, was profiled in an article marking his long career at the university that appeared on the front page of the Aug. 28 sports section of The Washington Times.



Business and Economics

Kevin Forbes, associate professor and chair, gave an interview that aired July 28 on Reuters TV regarding a proposed Congressional bill on energy and natural resources. He discussed who the winners and losers might be if the legislation passed.

He was quoted in an Aug. 11 Washington Post article regarding employment opportunities for those interested in the field of renewable and sustainable energy sources.

He was quoted in an Aug. 15 EnergyBiz Insider article, published by Energy Central, regarding his analysis of energy conservation and the ways that it can benefit consumers and utilities. The interview also touched on how the energy bill addresses these matters.

He participated in an Aug. 18 interview that aired on Reuters TV regarding the issue of rising oil and gas prices in the United States and the possible threat they pose to consumer spending.

He was quoted in two Sept. 4 Washington Post articles regarding the recent increase in gas prices that resulted from Hurricane Katrina. One of the stories was reissued in more than 25 publications across the country.




Campus Ministry

Rev. Robert Schlageter, O.F.M. Conv., director, campus ministry, was quoted in an Aug. 18 Catholic Standard (Washington, D.C.) article that profiled the Office of Campus Ministry’s annual tradition of student room blessings. Former student minister John Meehan, B.A. 2005, now an employee of the Office of Public Affairs, also was quoted in the story.


Video from CUA’s candlelight vigil for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, organized by the Office of Campus Ministry, was shown during the conclusion of WETA -TV’s Sept. 10  “Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly” program.

 



Canon Law

Monsignor Ronny Jenkins, assistant professor, was quoted in a Sept. 1 Times Union (Albany, N.Y.) article regarding a canon law tribunal that is scheduled to hear the appeals of priests accused of sexual abuse who are challenging their removal from ministry.

He was quoted in a Sept. 12 U.S. News & World Report article regarding the Church’s position on exorcisms for an article about the movie “The Exorcism of Emily Rose.” He spoke about the same topic on Sept. 13 in an interview with the online magazine Slate.

He also provided background information for an Aug. 1 Los Angeles Times op-ed column about dilemmas facing Catholic judges as they relate to the nomination of John G. Roberts Jr. to the U.S. Supreme Court.



Education

Leonard DeFiore, research assistant professor, was quoted in an Aug. 16 St. Louis Post-Dispatch article regarding lay Catholics assuming positions of leadership at Catholic schools.



Law

Robert Destro, professor, was quoted in an Aug. 14 Associated Press story that appeared in the National Catholic Register (North Haven, Conn.) and several other Catholic publications regarding the appointment of John G. Roberts Jr. and other Catholics to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Peter B. Rutledge, assistant professor, was quoted in a Sept. 7 USA Today article regarding the death of William Rehnquist, former chief justice of the United States.

Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele delivered the 37th annual Pope John XXIII Lecture at CUA’s Columbus School of Law on Aug. 29. The event was televised on C-SPAN and C-SPAN 2. An Aug. 30 Catholic News Service story about his speech appeared in more than 20 publications across the United States.



Music

Murry Sidlin, dean, and Andrew Simpson, associate professor, were quoted in an Aug. 12 WAMU-FM (Washington. D.C.) “Metro Connection” feature that profiled the Kennedy Center debut of “Songs of the Forgotten War.” Sidlin, who commissioned the musical piece, asked Simpson and 18 other composers to each create one minute of music inspired by one of the statues in the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

Joseph Gatwood, associate professor, was described as a “wonderful teacher” in a June 19 Daily Progress (Charlottesville, Va.) article about the success of Madison West, a 10-year-old violin prodigy from Charlottesville who studies with Gatwood.


Physics

A CUA database that holds records of halo coronal mass objects was mentioned in a July 26 EOS-Transactions, AGU (Washington, D.C.) article.


Politics

Stephen Schneck, associate professor and chair, was quoted in an Aug. 17 Catholic News Service article about Frank Rooney, the White House nominee for U.S. ambassador to the Vatican.

He was noted in a Sept. 16 Washington Times article, which previewed his Sept. 20 CUA lecture on the origins and ideas of the U.S. Constitution, delivered to celebrate Constitution Day.

An article by Dennis Coyle, associate professor, politics, on Supreme Court nominee John Roberts Jr. was posted on National Review Online Sept. 1.

Maryann Cusimano Love, associate professor, gave an interview about the London bombings and effective responses to terrorism that aired on the Tony Tribiani syndicated radio show July 7.

She also gave an interview about ethical and effective responses to terrorism in the wake of the London bombings that appeared on CNN International television on July 10.

James O’Leary, associate professor, gave a Sept. 2 interview to Reuters TV (Washington, D.C.) about U.S./China relations and the expectations of the Sept. 7 meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintau and President George Bush. (The meeting was ultimately postponed due to President Bush’s involvement in the relief effort following Hurricane Katrina.)

John Kenneth White, professor, was quoted in a Sept. 16 St. Louis Post-Dispatch article regarding the so-called “values divide” among the American public and the Democrats’ inability to connect with voters in the 2004 presidential election.


Social Service

Cathleen Gray, associate professor, was interviewed for a Sept. 9 WRC-TV (Washington, D.C.) “NBC News at 5” story about ways that victims are coping with the fear and anxiety stemming from Hurricane Katrina.


Sociology

Dean Hoge, professor, was quoted in a Sept. 13 Catholic News Service article about the CUA Center for American Catholic Studies symposium titled “The Spirituality of the American Priest,” which was held on campus on Sept. 12.

Rev. Paul Sullins, associate professor of sociology, was quoted in an Aug. 12 Catholic News Service article regarding the Life Cycle Institute’s development of new software designed to reduce testing costs for religious education programs.



Summer Sessions

An Aug. 29 Washington Times brief announced the appointment of Harriet A. Nokuri as CUA’s director of summer sessions.


Theology and Religious Studies

The appointment of Monsignor Kevin W. Irwin, professor, as dean of the School of Theology and Religious Studies, was noted in an Aug. 26 story issued by the Catholic News Service.  Monsignor Irwin’s appointment also was noted in news briefs in the Sept. 1 Catholic Standard (Washington, D.C.), Sept. 1 Arlington (Va.) Catholic Herald, Sept. 9 National Catholic Reporter (Kansas City, Mo.), Sept. 11 National Catholic Register (North Haven, Conn.),  and the Sept. 11 Our Sunday Visitor (Huntington, Ind).

He also was quoted in a Sept. 9 Philadelphia Inquirer story about the designation of 2005 as the “Year of the Eucharist” by the late Pope John Paul II.

Rev. Frank Danella, O.S.F.S., associate dean for seminary and ministry programs, provided commentary about Hurricane Katrina for a special September issue of “Vital Theology,” an independent, ecumenical newsletter that provides theological perspectives on issues in the news.

John Grabowski, associate dean and associate professor, was quoted in an Aug. 17 National Catholic Register article regarding the increasing popularity of teenage abstinence campaigns.

Rev. Joseph Komonchak, the John C. and Gertrude P. Hubbard Professor of Religious Studies, was quoted in a June 3 article appearing in Commonweal magazine regarding the appointment of Pope Benedict XVI and the new pontiff’s theological approach.

Rev. Raymond Studzinski, O.S.B., was quoted in a July 28 Evangelist (Albany, N.Y.) article regarding common Catholic preparation for the end of life.


CUA in General

The Sept. 1 WRC-TV (Washington, D.C.) program “NBC News at 6” featured an excerpt of the homily delivered on Sept. 1 at CUA’s Mass of the Holy Spirit by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, archbishop of Washington and CUA chancellor, urging the CUA community to remember the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Catholic University was mentioned in a Sept. 8 Catholic Standard (Washington, D.C.) article regarding CUA’s decision to offer admissions to students from other universities affected by Hurricane Katrina. The same issue contained an article profiling CUA’s day of prayer and the university’s relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

On Sept. 14, CUA hosted a “Conference on Catholic Education,” a gathering of Catholic educators from around the country. The conference included addresses by Archbishop J. Michael Miller, C.S.B., secretary for the Congregation of Catholic Education at the Vatican, and Bishop Bernard J. Harrington, chair of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Education. It was featured in Sept. 15 and 16 Catholic News Service articles.
