Awards and Honors
William D’Antonio, adjunct professor of sociology, was honored on Oct. 29 by the Tiro A. Segna Foundation, Inc., the oldest Italian heritage club in the United States, for his contribution to family, Church and charitable organizations.
Rev. Allan Johnson-Taylor, a Ph.D. student in theology and religious studies, received a $13,000 stipend for the current academic year from the Hispanic Theological Initiative.
Monsignor Robert Sokolowski, Elizabeth Breckenridge Caldwell Professor of Philosophy, received the Maritain Medal for Scholarly Excellence from the American Maritain Association at its annual banquet on Oct. 23 in Atlanta.
On the Road
Andrew Abela, assistant professor of business and economics, gave a Nov. 9 lecture titled “The Market Researcher as Trusted Adviser to Line Management” at Microsoft’s International Market Research Summit at the corporation’s headquarters in Redmond, Wash. The summit brought together 80 of Microsoft’s top market research managers from around the world.
Maria Sophia Aguirre, associate professor of business and economics, gave an Oct. 3 lecture titled “Sustainable Development: Why the Focus on Population?” at the University of Virginia. The lecture was sponsored by UVA’s Department of Sociology.
Elizabeth Bertera, associate professor of social service, presented a Nov. 9 lecture at the annual meeting of the Public Health Association at the Washington, D.C., Convention Center. Her lecture was titled “Mental Health in U.S. Adults: The Role of Social Support and Social Negativity in Personal Relationships.” A paper based on Bertera’s lecture will be published in the February 2005 (vol. 22, number 1) Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.
Jude Dougherty, dean emeritus and professor emeritus of philosophy, presented a paper titled “Indestructible Islam,” and Monsignor Sokolowski presented a paper titled “Art and Christian Intelligence” at the Oct. 21-24 annual international meeting of the American Maritain Association in Atlanta. The title of the meeting’s theme was “The Renewal of Civilization: Toward Justice and Peace.”
Vadim D. Knyazev, research associate professor of chemistry, gave an Aug. 24 invited lecture titled “Kinetics and Products of Radical-Radical Reactions of Hydrocarbon-Based Radicals” at a symposium organized within the 227th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia. The symposium was called “Combustion Chemistry: From Elementary Reactions to Extensive Reaction Mechanisms.”
Gary Sloan, assistant professor of drama, and CUA alumnus John Lescault, B.A. 1980, are featured actors in the Nov. 10 – Dec. 12 production of The Diary of Anne Frank at the Round House Theatre in Bethesda, Md.
Publications
Kevin Forbes, associate professor of business and economics, wrote an article titled “Space Weather and the Electricity Market: An Initial Assessment” published in the Oct. 21 (vol. 2) issue of the journal Space Weather.
Professor Knyazev published an article titled “Temperature-Dependent Kinetics of the Gas-Phase Reactions of OH with Cl2, CH4 and C3H8,” in vol. 108 of The Journal of Physical Chemistry (2004). Co-authors of the article were Mikhail G. Bryukov, Slawomir M. Lomnicki, Cheri A. McFerrin and Barry Dellinger of Louisiana State University.
