Summer Happenings at CUA
By Hughan Biggar
Approximately 1,500 Catholic University undergraduate and graduate students are expected to take classes this summer, joining students from other schools who will be on campus participating in a variety of activities.
The activities range from regular classes to opera training to sports camps.
“We have two structured summer sessions five and six weeks long, the first one beginning May 19, and several special sessions of varying length that begin each week of the summer, starting as early as May 12,” says Harriet Nokuri, summer sessions director.
The first session runs from May 19 to June 21 or June 28, depending on the course. The second session begins June 30 and runs to Aug. 2 or 9. Eligible students can choose to live on campus if they wish.
New summer courses this year include Church in Africa; Biomedical Health Care Issues; Religion and Society; Art, Religion & Magic; Italy: Sociology of Crime, Sociology of Deviance; Intellectual Property Issues in Libraries and Information Centers; and Organization of Internet Resources.
“We’re also offering more online courses this summer,” Nokuri said, noting that there will be eight such courses this summer, compared to only one last summer. “Students can enroll from anywhere in the world as long as they have a good computer.”
Summer courses include an intensive English-as-a-second-language program in June and July and a Summer Program in Ancient Languages. The latter gives students the opportunity to complete the equivalent of four semesters of university-level study in either Greek or Latin.
As an added bonus, Nokuri says, “our summer school tuition is competitive — 20 to 30 percent cheaper than that of many private universities in the area.”
During the summer, high school students can take freshman-level classes as commuters and sample college life at CUA. Many of CUA’s resources, including the Writing Center, will also be available to eligible students taking classes in the summer.
Summer housing is available for CUA students in Millennium South, Caldwell and Seton halls; more information is on the Housing Services Web site at http://housing.cua.edu/. In order to be eligible for an on-campus summer assignment through Housing Services, individuals must be a current CUA student or a visiting college student enrolled in summer courses at CUA. Current CUA students do not need to be enrolled in summer classes in order to be eligible for summer housing.
Also of note on campus this summer, the Ward Center Summer Music Program of CUA’s Benjamin T. Rome School of Music is offering intensive classes in elementary-school or home-schooling music pedagogy. The classes meet eight hours a day from June 23 to June 27. The program also offers a Gregorian chant practicum.
The School of Library and Information Sciences is offering the 30th Institute on Federal Library Resources. The institute opens May 12 and features for-credit lectures, as well as panel discussions and visits to government libraries. Topics will include how federal libraries are meeting today's challenges in preservation and electronic records management, emerging technologies, and mission support (marketing, outsourcing). The institute will also address the professional career path in federal librarianship.
For those looking to make their summer constructive, the School of Architecture and Planning is offering its Summer Institute for Architecture, with numerous undergraduate- and graduate-level courses. Course offerings are expected to include design studios and elective courses on architecture history, graphics, furniture design and computer-aided design/fabrication.

In addition, the architecture and planning school conducts two three-week sessions for high school or college students who wish to explore architecture as a possible career. These students are introduced to all aspects of architecture, from design and history to office practice. They live on campus and work in the design studio alongside architecture majors attending the Summer Institute.
High school and elementary school students can participate in two other programs on campus. From June 23 to July 12, the music school hosts the Opera Institute for Young Singers, for those between 15 and 18 years old. From July 21 to July 25 there will be a percussion seminar, Lion Drumming World Percussion Seminar, for fourth- to 12th-graders.
Outside of the classroom, CUA athletic teams will help lead several camps on campus. The Cardinal Basketball Academy for boys and girls takes place in two sessions, June 16 to June 20 and June 23 to June 27. The Capitol Lacrosse Camp at Catholic University, featuring one the sport’s top players, Matt Ward, takes place July 27 through July 30. The Revolution Field Hockey Camps at CUA, taught by CUA head coach Gia Cillizza, run from July 13 to July 16.
In addition to all these CUA events, more than 20 external organizations will use CUA facilities to host summer conferences. The events and conferences include those of the Special Olympics from May 20 to May 22 (with an expected 800 participants) and the National Cursillo Conference, which trains laypeople to become Christian leaders, from July 28 to Aug. 3 (with an expected 700 participants). See the list of already-scheduled external events below.
